Emailing a cohort

Hi

I'm using moodle 2.3 and I want to be able to email a cohort.  I used the filter in bulk user actions to select all the members of a cohort but there is no email users option in the drop down.  I find it hard to believe this isn't a function in moodle so I am guessing I am missing something.
