This search box is provided only on the pages where course categories are displayed.
I think you can display the course names on the page and hide it or else if you want to display the category names and still hide it, then you need to change the CSS file as mentioned above.
You can change the default view from Frontpage settings (Frontpage >> Frontpage settings) and select list of courses instead of list of categories or combo list.
