Checkboxes and defaults in Site Admin for Moodle 2.3

Hello all,

I'm totally new to Moodle and new here. I have been searching the web for an explanation to this but can't find it. Not sure how to narrow my search. And I know it's probably simple:

When I'm in Site Administration in Moodle 2.3 and I'm configuring anything, I'm having trouble understanding the Defaults vs. checking the boxes. Is the default in place when I have NOT checked the box? Meaning, the description to the right of the box is currently active. Only if I check the box will I select the option to the LEFT of the checkbox, which may or may not equal the default. Or is the default telling me whether or not the box was originally checked?

See these examples:

This seems clear:

Admins see all [ ] Default: no

If I do nothing, admins will only see their own personal calendars. Right? If I check it, they will see everyone's calendars.

But look at this one:

Enable calendar export [ ] Default: yes

So, if I don't check it, it's still yes? And if I do check it, it's also yes? So if I want no, what do I do? Or does not checking it mean no?
(This is unchecked for me right now)

Here's another:

Enable comments [ ] Default: yes
(This is unchecked for me right now)

Same question.

So, one thought I had is that the Default is telling me that the checkbox came checked out of the box. (LOL) I mean, Moodle was installed vanilla with those boxes checked. Am I on to something? It gets hard when it's a negative:

Link admin categories [X] Default: no

My thought is someone came along after we installed and checked this box which is normally by default, unchecked. Am I getting it?

By the way, I do not have access to anyone who did any work or admin settings prior to my being responsible for it and there is no documentation for our choices. That's why I'm in a bit of darkness.

We have a custom theme and no way to control it internally. I'm playing with these various configuration settings with little-to-no effect. I'm guessing it's cause of the theme. I just wanted to be sure I'm understanding how these work.

Thanks so much for any help on making this clearer for me. I sound silly asking, but I really want to be sure I get it.

Bobby
